Cobh’s Golf season reached its boiling point over the week from the 12th to 17th July – Noreen Kelly’s Presidents Prize was held for both, Ladies and Men! The third “Major” within the past 6 weeks!
A great occasion was again blessed by plenty of sunshine (for the Ladies) and at least mostly dry but windy (challenging!) weather for the Men! The prizes were stunning – a beautiful gold necklace for the winner of the Ladies Section and a great set of Clubs (with bag!!) for the Men.
Members played again in record numbers, showing how important this important competition is ranking on the golf calendar. Congratulations to Stuart Meredith and Margaret Fenton, who emerged victorious after all games were played. Stuart (Handicap 7) won with 41 points just ahead of Peter Meaney (4 / 41 points) and Dave Banim (12 / 39). In the Ladies Section, Margaret (playing off 13, scoring 41 points) fended off strong competition from B Hennerby (27 / 39) and A. Lenihan (17 / 37).
President Noreen was ever present over the whole week, and still found time to celebrate the Junior Team’s Foursomes Munster Championship – and organise the visit of the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney and Cobh Mayor Jim Quinlan in the new club premises!
Suitably, Darren Clarke won the “Open” on Sunday – watched by a good crowd in the clubhouse over a good steak (or great coffee, tea or cakes) from Bramley Lodge, who were offering the food menu this weekend! No wonder the presentation on Sunday evening (in the Commodore Hotel) was packed – and no wonder that the music and singing never stopped… What a great week it was! All members felt absolutely spoilt! Thank you, Noreen!
