With the race season getting into full swing, a busy week got underway with the ‘Streets Of Fermoy 5km’ where the exciting Maggie Sillett (20.44) lead home the junior female field in taking fashion.

The following evening seven of our athletes took part in the BHAA Pfizer 6mile event staged in Ringaskiddy where Trish Doherty (55:47) knocked an
impressive three minutes off last year’s effort over the same course. Sarah Aherne (52:28) completed her first run over this distance with a steady even paced effort with more to come going by this pleasing effort.

Registering a personal best on the night was Kevin O’Keeffe (43:30), whose intensive training schedule of late has certainly borne fruit for him. Running for his B.H.A.A. employer, the Irish Naval Service, Shane Meyler (40:15) bagged himself a prize as part of the first team home in the “B” Team Men’s Section.

The following night saw a large club turnout at Fota Wildlife Park for the hugely popular 4mile Cheetah Run. Notable performances included those of Mairead Kearney (30.36) and Lynne Doherty (30.31) who both ran very strongly to each finish fourth within their respective age categories.

Also amongst the prize winners on the night was the impressive Paidi Kearney (25.42) who led home a Ballymore Cobh AC 1-2 with Marc Jones (31.06) continuing his recent strong run of form to fill the runners up spot. Siobhan Looney (30.51) was another to catch the eye on the night with a strong run to finish eleventh overall in the ladies standings.

The following weekend saw four of our members stepping up in distance to take on a half marathon around the Killarney Lakes and each preformed with great credit. An athlete that has progressed immensely since joining the club last summer and putting in fantastic run here by knocking a huge nineteen minutes of her previous best was Heike Von Heyne (2:08:26).

Toeing the line for her second race in four days, Deirdre Meyler (1:55:40) showed little signs of fatigue while producing another very satisfactory finish. In what served as a very useful warm up for his forthcoming marathon run, Shane Meyler (1:40:44) put in a productive performance that should stand to him over the longer distance.

Having kept a sensible pace for the first half of the race, Stephen Ryan (1:40:41) wound the tempo up to score an impressive personal best, providing himself with a very solid base to begin preparing for this autumn’s Berlin Marathon.

Finally, a beautiful day in CIT, Bishopstown welcomed competitors for the second day of the Cork A.A.I County Track & Field Championships. Aine Sheridan impressed in the sprint event while Vanessa Frawley excelled in the high jump, a fantastic effort by both these girls.

Marc Jones finished his busy week with a bronze medal in the U15 200m. Young Ryan McCormick showed great maturity in not getting carried away early in this long race and coming down the home straight he powered passed many of the tiring field to claim a very credible 6th place.

The days action was rounded off in some style by Tomasz Krawcysk who claimed gold in the 3,000m with a classy display giving reason to believe that there is plenty more to come from this athlete as the season progresses.
