Kilbehenny, Co. Tipperary and 365 athletes lined up on the old Dublin-Cork road. Humidity over 90%. Mercury rising towards 20 degrees. Hardly optimum conditions for the Cahir half-marathon but onwards, undeterred went the Ballymore Cobh AC travelling contingent.
Karen Geasley (2:22:15), Jan Verwey (1:57:35) , Damien Whelan (1:57:18) and Lynne Doherty’s (1:54:59) performances were of particular significance, for here were four athletes whom only within the last number of months had joined the club through its Fit4Life Beginner to 5k program and were now striding out the long miles in fine style.
Heike von Heyne (2:07:13) completed her fourth half-marathon in two months, this effort producing a new personal best. No stopping the German athlete at the moment, long may it continue.
Orla O’Rourke (1:29:41) truly well versed over this distance and remarkably consistent, made light of the conditions to lead home the Cobh athletes while Shane Meyler (1:34:33) was in close pursuit as he continues ramping up the mileage for an autumn marathon assault. Both athletes recorded personal bests on the day.
There were plenty of Black + Amber singlets on show in neighbouring Carrigtwohill the following week for a testing 5k in which Ruth Phelan (26.11) took second place in her age category as well as being first club lady home.
Trevor Cummins (17.30), first male club runner over the line, made it into the top ten in the overall field while Kevin Jones (22.13) improved on his previous best to score a personal record over the distance.
Most recently, a number of our athletes lined up in Churchtown South for the third leg of the Ballycotton 5mile Summer Series.
Ora O’Rourke (33.14) pushed herself into the top ten in the overall women’s standings with one round to go. Meanwhile, Sinead Daly (39.33) is threatening to break into the top thirty female runners, each of whom will receive the coveted series t-shirt.
Harry Gibbs (33.57), first male club runner home on the evening, is also eyeing up a series t-shirt as he currently sits just outside the top fifty men going into next months finale in Ballycotton.
There is plenty of races to look forward to as the season progresses with none as highly anticipated as our own annual club race which will this year return to form part of the Friday night opening schedule for the Cobh People’s Regatta Weekend on August 14th, with a 7.30pm start for this flat 4mile event. As our main source of fundraising, we encourage runners of all abilities to dust off their trainers for an exciting night of sport on The Great Island.
