The Great Island Community Forum has now been in the making for over 12 months. The forum was publicly announced at our public meeting which we held in June 2015. ‘The GICF is a cooperative platform for sharing ideas, information and inspiration for the benefit of all people on Great Island’.
Through SECAD funding we had a facilitator hold our meetings and because of this we identified both assets and liabilities on Great Island which we are committed to maintaining/solving. We also established ‘pillars’. We categorized all parts of Great Island into these ‘Pillars’ and they include sports, environment, business and tourism, leisure and hobby, community services and supports, carers, the aged, persons with disability, youth, residents associations and education. At our public meeting members of different groups in attendance were then elected to represent each pillar, some pillars because of their size had more than one rep.
Through our pillars the GICF represents every corner of The Great Island. The GICF also acts as a voice for the people living or working on Great Island and this is essential as we no longer have a Town Council.
Since then we have been active on different projects which include the Great Island Flag, the 1916 Garden and many more. I would encourage you to find which pillar best suits you and connect with the pillar rep with ideas, information or inspiration for all.
