Catch of the Day – Angelika Höger
Opening Thursday 5 November 7pm – Exhibition runs 06 to 26 November
Following on from her residency at Sirius in 2014, Angelika Höger’s site-specific installation – a series of kinetic objects, sound and video works framed in a laboratory setting, invite the viewer to consider unsung undertones from the sea.
“It was in January 2014 when I first came to Cobh. Impressions of living and working by the sea, watching the slow rhythm of tide falling and rising, the change of light and tune, influenced my work in progress. I wondered what it is that makes people gaze at the sea for hours. I started to explore; I examined abandoned objects, things I came across on the shore, drawn to their texture and the peculiar sounds they made in relation to water, wind and motion. I made sound and film recordings. I focused on these barely noticeable gentle tones. Unusual aesthetic and acoustic syntheses were playfully established; for example, when a light plastic bottle makes contact with a sharp rust-encrusted metal frame, connected by strings, which in combination form a kind of instrument, gently set in motion by the rhythm of wind and waving water. These impressions left a lasting imprint on my work. Parts of these early works I re-contextualised into different settings in a kind of laboratory situation. I found new materials and correlations that still refer to these first experimental studies.”
