pirates4001121A quite weekend for the men’s Junior 1 and 2 squads as the weather played havoc with fixtures across the province. Provisionally the league game away to Tralee has been re-fixed for Dec 13th.

Munster Under 18 League Conference 6:   Midelton 39 : 5 Cobh Pirates

Munster Under 16 League Conference 4: Douglas Carrigaline 10 : 25 Cobh Pirates

Cobh Pirates headed to Moneygourney to take on the combined efforts of Douglas and Carrigaline in their second last league game. Prematch preparation was disturbed by failure of appointed Mar referee to show up, missing jerseys, and the inability of team bus to make it to the ground. Unseasonal tidal conditions prevented James Murphy from attending the match, which necessitated the return of Richie Daly to the side-line. The game, now being refereed by Joe Whelan, ex Navel Service, and long-time friend of Cobh Pirates, started as the rain stopped and the sun came out. Douglas / Carrigaline, or The Cork Barbarians, as they like to be called, kicked off with the wind in their backs, but thankfully it was The Pirates who embraced the Baa-Baas Spirit, co incidentally also celebrating their one hundred and twenty fifth anniversary. Pirates continued to take the game to The Cork Barbarians, and moved the ball from touch line to touch line at every opportunity, which resulted in Marc Jones rounding the Baa-Baas danger man Chimini Oji, to score in the corner after five minutes. A try that William Percy Carmichael would most certainly been proud of. This early score and further tries from Leo Daly, Cian Walker and Sam Barricauu, following great work from Aoran Whelan and Zach Devlin, knocked the fight of The Baa-Baas and Pirates continued to have the upper hand for the entire match. A total of 16 substitutes were used during the game and all along with the starting fifteen contributed to an excellent performance. Pirates now start preparations for their final league game at home to Sundays Well in The Paddock on Saturday 21st of November.

Youghal few first to score crossing for a try after 5 minutes to take an early lead, but this was cancelled out after 12 minutes when scrum half Christine Meilke (Pirates) grounded the ball at the base of the post pads.  South Cork extended their lead four minutes later, following an initial break by Abbie Hacket (Old Christians) and a kick ahead by Emily Piggott (Pirates) allowing the chasing Lisa O’Driscoll(Pirates) to scoop the ball and sprint for the line. Youghal were to draw level again three minutes before half time with another try.  In the last play of the half, Lisa broke again to score to leave the half time score 15-10 in favour of South Cork.Eight minutes into the second half, Lisa again exploited gaps in the Youghal defence to break and sprit for the line and was on hand to receive the kick off an immediately break again from the restart to score.  We possession retained again from the restart, South Cork worked their way up the pitch again to get within striking distance of the Youghal line allowing Captain Emma Worrell (Pirates) to barge over for a try. Outhalf Emily was successful with the conversion

Winger Sarah O’Callaghan (Old Christians) was on hand to collect the restart and immediately broke to extend the home sides lead further and Emily added the extras.  Youghal were to strike back a few minutes later and went over from close range to score their third.  Lisa was to have the final say in the match, breaking from within the South Cork 22 to sprint the length of the pitch to score her fifth try on the stroke of full time to leave the final score South Cork 44 Youghal 15.
