Cobh Tidy Towns volunteers cleaned Carrigaloe beach as well as streets around town. Did you know that there are 8million tonnes of plastic waste in our seas and that 80% of this originates in land based activities? Much of the plastic found in our seas is blown by the wind or washed through storm drains into the water. We have individual and collective responsibility to keep our seas clean. Plastic can be hazardous to sea life and marine transport.

Data published this week from the Imperial College in London shows that the most effective way to reduce plastic in our seas is to remove it from the shores. We are one of 450 registered groups with Clean Coast Ireland who participate in coastal clean ups. At the end of 2015 we were runners up in a “Retro Rubbish” competition run by Clean Coasts when we tweeted a photo of a 1992 20p coin found on Carrrigaloe beach ! Join us any Saturday at 10am if you would like to help.
