Why the sudden interest in Cobh? – Kieran McCarthy

For the last five years neither Junior Minister Sean Sherlock or any other Cork East TD showed absolutely any interest in Cobh and the Great Island. Why the sudden upsurge in interest? Before the electorate decides who to cast their vote for some points need to be made and questions answered.

1.The Labour Party promised a task force after the closure of Irish Steel/Ispat. Can they please inform the electorate if that task force ever convened and what transpired.

2.The Junior Government Minister on TV3 told us of major investment in the Tourism sector in Cobh, which is most welcome, but does this include plans for a connection to Spike Island from the Ringaskiddy side, isolating Cobh even further?

3.On the same debate it was stated that this Government are totally committed to bringing investment and meaningful jobs to Cobh. They know this will never happen until the dangerous R624 Fota Road is brought up to 21st century standards. The IDA has consistently told local Public Representatives that they will never consider Cobh as a place to locate industry until such time as our road infrastructure is brought up to standard. In ten years as a TD and Junior Minister Sean Sherlock has failed to secure the necessary funding.

4.A real serious issue for our harbour and our country is what will happen if the only refinery in this State closes its gates. There is no willingness whatsoever form Labour to secure a vital asset. All we hear is of the huge investment going in to the Port of Cork new cargo terminal in Ringaskiddy. If the refinery closes Port of Cork traffic will halve,a loss of 4 million tons per year in throughput. Another sobering thought on this is if the refinery closes we will be left with another eyesore and potential environmental headache on our hands. Think the Junior Minister and his seniors will care? Not likely, just look at Irish Steel.
