These awards are not come by lightly and involve a detailed entry form divided into 8 categories that describe projects completed over the past year. A Tidy Towns adjudicator then pays an anonymous visit or visits during the summer months.

Cobh Tidy Towns are absolutely thrilled that the hard work undertaken by so many has been acknowledged in the National Awards. Cobh has seen steady progress since winning a first bronze medal in 2011 to winning a second gold medal and there has been an accompanying seismic shift in the sense of pride in Cobh.

Chairperson of Cobh TidyTowns, Ruth Ring explained that the medal is about far more than colourful flowers, clean streets and freshly painted buildings. “It gets to the heart of the community and acknowledges the time that our volunteers, CE worker & TÚS worker put into the town, the work of Cork County Council staff and the Cobh Councillors, the schoolchildren and their environmental projects, Cobh businesses and sporting and hobby clubs many of which are themselves run by volunteers in the community.” Ruth also acknowledged the generous support of Cobh Credit Union, the Port of Cork, Cork County Council and the people of Cobh without whose financial support Cobh Tidy Towns could not function.

“Thank you to everyone who has played a part in this Gold medal success. We are so passionate and proud of Cobh and today everyone is a winner. Cobh has come a long way and we are heading in the right direction to becoming Ireland’s Tidiest Town,” she concluded.
