Cobh Celtic Supporters Present €1400 Cheque To Guide Dogs
On Saturday September 24th the Cobh Celtic Supporters Club held their 10TH annual charity run fro Midleton to Cobh in aid of the Irish Guide dogs for the Blind. A grand total of 1400 was raised and this was presented to the local Guide Dogs representative in Cobh John Joe O’Shea on Tuesday December 6th in the Quarry Cock bar.
In the 10 years the club has managed to raise a grand total of 44548.38 through the charity run. The first year of the run in 2001 saw 301 raised for the Park Road Centre while the biggest amount raised was in 2008 where 9375 was presented to Cork ARC cancer support house. This years figure is down from 3300 last year, which was split between Breaking the Silence suicide awareness group and the Park Road Centre. The drop in monies raised is a reflection on the tough times we live in at present but every cent raised in these tough times goes alot further these days towards the day to day running of every charity.
The club would like to thank all those who particapated and helped out on the day, committee members Brian O Connor and Mark Leyden as well as the 3 non club members – Frank Cunningham, Gavin Fitzpatrick and Fiona Mackay who gave up their time and ran the event. Club member John Houten who acted as waterboy and local Guide Dog rep John Joe O’Shea who drove a safety vehicle. Also to be thanked are the Commodore Hotel who provided the water for the runners and the Marlogue Inn who provided sandwiches at the finishing line. The club would also like to acknowledge Cobh Ramblers for the use of their facilities on the day.
The next run will be aid of St Vincent de Paul which will be advertised in due course. People are advised that the run is not confined to club members and anybody willing to do the run and raise money for charity can contact any committee member for information. More runners = more money.
The Celtic supporters club have a members meeting on the first tuesday of every month @ 8.30 in the Quarry Cock Bar. This is also the venue for live matches.
