Cobh Hockey Club Notes 15th Jan

Two away games last weekend for the Club in Tipperary and Limerick and two very creditable score draws.  Saturday saw Div 3 travel to Tipperary Town for a 9.30am start but the team did not allow the early time to dissuade them from the task in hand.  Tipperary took the lead in the first half with a disputed goal that appeared to have been hit from outside the circle and off a Cobh player into the net. Cobh tried to get back on level terms in the first half but despite their efforts the game stayed at 1-0.  The second half saw Cobh dig deep again, which has been the story of this team all season, and when they were awarded a short corner Aoife Richardson passed to Gillian Morrissey to score her first goal of the season and such an important one too.  This 1-1 all draw see Cobh at the top of the table but with only 6 points separating the top 5 teams and a couple of these teams with games in hand the league is wide open.

Sunday saw Div 6 head to Limerick not having played for a month so a 2-2 draw was an excellent result as Limerick are currently on top of the table with Cobh going into second place with this draw (Dungarvan however in third spot have two games on hand). It took Cobh some time to settle and Limerick pushed hard for the opener with some nice moves. Tara Mansworth and Abbie Mulvihill in defence had a particularly good half.  Cobh had some lovely breaks and Kate Morgan in one of her trademark runs brought the ball from halfway to the circle and when her shot was saved by the excellent Limerick keeper the rebound came to Caroline Green who put it away.  Just before half time Sarah Crone, who had been having some great runs on the right wing came onto a ball inside the circle and showing some great skill rounded the keeper and put the ball in the net.  The second half saw the effects of the long lay off show for Cobh and Limerick upped the ante and pulled one goal back.  They kept the pressure up and much to Cobh’s dismay equalised with a shot from close range. Cobh however were determined not to lose this game and they fought hard for the points and only for another excellent save from the Limerick keeper could have taken all three points.  A draw was the fair result however. Tara Mansworth and Sarah Crone were joint Players of the Matvh.
