Cobh Hockey Notes 30th Jan
Mixed results for the Club last weekend. Div 3 took on Church of Ireland who brought in some of their more experienced players for this game. Straight from the hit off they caught Cobh and won a short corner which when hit in deflected off a Cobh player into the net. 1-0 down after a minute Cobh struggled to get to grips with the game but slowly they pulled their way back and had some great runs. They were very unlucky not to equalise just before half time when a shot on goal just went wide. The second half saw both teams put some good moves together but it was C. of I who again stole one on Cobh when they they caught them with a quick ball that they put away. This looked like a step too far for Cobh but as in previous games they dug deep and with about 15 mins remaining they won a short corner which eventually came to Gillian Morrison on the edge of the circle who buried the ball with a great shot. This spurred Cobh on and following a long corner Katie Murphy put the ball into the net to equalise. The last 5 mins were tense as both teams fought for the winner but the points were shared on this occasion.
Div 6 travelled to take on UCC in the Cup and this proved to be a thrilling game with nothing between the two teams. UCC had the better of the first half and had some good chances one of which they put away after about 25 mins when from a short corner they scored to leave it 1-0 at half time. The second half saw Cobh attack more and they delighted their supporters when they equalised from a great short corner hit by Mari Moynihan. As extra time loomed both teams fought hard for the winner and when Cobh were awarded another short corner only a great save from the UCC goalie kept her team in the game. Extra time (golden goal) could not separate the teams and so it went to penalty flicks. Again here nothing could separate them after the first five flicks with the young Cobh goalie Jamie Kearney doing brilliantly (her first time facing a penalty). So to sudden death penalties and unfortunately it was UCC who took the game when they scored after Cobh’s flick had been saved. This was a great team performance by Cobh with everyone giving their all in this exciting game.
