Cobh Pirates – St. Stephen’s Day 2011

Published

on

Early on a cold and blustery St Stephens day morning the under 19s team, and friends, took to the water in Cuskinny to raise funds for the juvenile section. The lads take on these unenviable fundraiser yearly, generally under the charge of Colm Morgan and Paul Mulvihill. With the poses clearly rehearsed, and a few tummys tucked in the group made the charge into the refreshing cool sea water.

As the club caters for over 300 under age players from minis to youths, all these raised funds are much appreciated. The juvenile section would like to thank the players for their effort and all those who sponsored them on the day and throughout the year.

Cobh Pirates RFC annual Stephen Day Charity Match(es) were very well supported this year both on and off the pitches. Thank you one an all. At various stages there were up to 65 participants on the field with more than 100 spectators, despite the less than favourable weather conditions.€500 was collected for Cobh Hospital and as always Cobh Pirates commends the hospital staff and volunteers for their fantastic work in support of the community. On the playing side we had a mixture of  U19’s, Ladies , Current adult players and Veteran’ s. Kieran McKeown who has lost none of his speed or guile was given the man of the match award whilst Trish O’ Donovan was Lady of the Tournament. Awards were also made to the Referees’ on the day Murris Mahon and Commander Eugene Ryan. Special mention was made with regard to Commander Ryan’s impending retirement from the Irish Naval Service after 40 years . Cobh Pirates wish to thank him for his long association with the club and to wish himself and Deirdre a long and happy retirement. Awards were also made to Bill Dilane for his fantastic work with the Junior 2 Team and to Ian Dunne whose Cashel side continue to progress well in AIL division 4.

Finally, it was fantastic to see so many friends of Cobh Pirates, young and not so young, home based and those who travelled home for Christmas together, enjoying the comforts of the recently refurbished club house.

The club would like to wish all its sponsors, players, members, friends and supporters and Happy and Successful New Year and we look forward to seeing you all in the Paddock in 2012.
