Cobh to commemorate 112th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic

Cobh will hold a public ceremony of remembrance for all who lost their lives in the Titanic disaster in 1912
On Sunday April 14th 2024, Cobh will commemorate the 112th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic. The East Cork town, famously known as the final port of call for the ill-fated ship, will welcome the public to join in honouring the memory of those who lost their lives when the Titanic sank on its maiden voyage to New York in 1912.
Organised by Cobh Tourism, the annual commemorative event will commence at 3pm at the Titanic Memorial in Pearse Square, featuring solemn tributes including music, prayers, and the laying of wreaths. Dignitaries, Cobh locals, maritime enthusiasts, and the general public are cordially invited to attend and pay their respects.
A Colour Party from the Cobh Irish Branch O.N.E. will march to the Titanic Memorial, where ceremonies will include prayers, wreath laying, and musical honours by the Commodore Male Voice Choir.
Following the memorial service, attendees will gather at the Promenade to hear the names of the 79 passengers who boarded the Titanic in Cobh on April 11th, 1912, only to tragically perish in the icy waters of the North Atlantic four days later. A wreath will then be cast into the sea in remembrance of all those lost in the maritime disaster, followed by the Cobh Confraternity Band’s poignant rendition of the Last Post and Reveille.
For those wishing to learn more about Cobh’s Titanic Connection a visit to Cobh Heritage Centre, the Titanic Experience Cobh or joining in a Titanic Trail Walking Tour are a must, where the stories of those who set sail from Queenstown on the ships ill-fated maiden voyage are brought to life.
