Beamish Senior Cup 3rd Round Result: Passage 3-4 Cobh Wanderers

Wanderers recovered from a very poor first half performance and a three-goal deficit to win 4-3 at local rivals Passage in the Beamish Cup. The pace of Stephen Kenny down the right wing caused Wanderers all sorts of problems in the first half and he scored the first, cutting in from the right to slip the ball past Mark Power in the Wanderers goal. Kenny added a second on 22 minutes running onto a long clearance and planting the ball in the net. Passage were three to the good before the half-hour mark when a free kick came back off the crossbar and the attacker reacted quickly to lash the ball home.

The half-time team talk took only six minutes before Ciarán Griffin fashioned a chance for himself but his left foot effort went agonisingly wide of the right hand post. It took only another minute for Nathan O’ Connell to play a one-two in the box before squeezing the ball to the net at the near post. The momentum was totally with Wanderers at this stage and Mikey Foley hit a cracking left foot shot to the net from the edge of the area when it broke to him kindly. Wanderers were level on 63 minutes when Ciarán Griffin followed up to finish after his penalty kick was well saved by the Passage keeper. The scoring was complete when Mikey Foley repeated his left foot pile driver to score the winner. Wanderers had many chances to add to the score but some heroic defending kept them at bay. Passage were reduced to few efforts in the second half but the Wanderers defence dealt with ant threat that materialised. This was certainly a game of two halves and a great show of character form all the players to turn it around in such style in that second half.

Junior Division 3 result: Cobh Wanderers 2-2 Bandon

Super sub Iain Barrett scored in the 89th minute to snatch a draw from the jaws of defeat against Bandon this evening. Bandon started the game very well and it took a superb left handed save from Walsh in the Wanderers goal followed by a strong challenge by Ricky parker to deny Bandon the lead after eight minutes. Butch scored another great goal to open the scoring in the 19th minute somewhat against the run of play. Stav had a shot blocked and the ball fell to Butch about 30 yards out. He instinctively chipped the ball back over the keeper in into the top corner of the net.

Bandon continued to shade possession in this period and grabbed two goals in the space of 11 minutes to turn the game on its head. The first was an unstoppable right foot effort from the edge of the area while the second was rather fortunate and arguably offside. Wanderers totally dominated the second half but seemed destined not to score until Sean Alface forced a corner that Luke Stavrianos headed off the upright before Barrett pounced for a deserved equaliser. The draw is a blow to Wanderers promotion prospects but the lads are still in with a chance and will fight to the end, as they did this evening.
