A combined Cobh Pirates/Bandon ladies team had a win against Bantry on Sunday. Having played the previous Sunday in Cobh, the Pirates ladies travelled to a wet and windy Bandon to link up with the Bandon ladies to play for the first time as a combined side against the ladies from Bantry Bay. This was the last challenge match prior to the league campaign starting next week, with Bandon / Cobh Pirates running in four trys and three conversions in difficult conditions.
The Pirates ladies made a big impact on the match, with 2nd Row, Claire Keogh owning the line out, securing the majority of the home sides throws and stealing a couple of Bantry lineouts during the match. Speedy deliveries from scrum half Emir O’Brien ensure the backline could spring into action and ensuring winger Jill O’Mahony could unleash her blistering pace out wide. A great workrate from prop Susan Dominey saw some big carries and drives throughout the match, while Eilish Walsh playing at inside centre showed good hands and pace to launch a number of backline attacks as well as using her big boot to make good territory gains against the stiff breeze in the first half.
The home side exploited many attacking opportunities throughout, crossing the line in every quarter, and a solid defence kept Bantry at bay, severely limiting their attacking options and securing turnover ball on numerous occasions. Final Score Bandon/Cobh Pirates 26, Bantry Bay 0.
