Sarah Long and Éanna HeaveySarah Long: W/w SIRIUS Saturday, 11 November 3–5pm Free; no booking required The artist and writer Sarah Long examines the influence of Irish history and literature on both our cultural memory and collective perspective of space, particularly looking at suppressed feminine archetypes. W/w (2022-23) is a multi-dimensional quasi-novella concerned with who gets to exist, where and when and why. This iteration of W/w has performative, sound and video elements. Confined to the porch during the COVID-19 lockdowns, the endogenous protagonist Mary is searching for a new form, a larger territory, to occupy. Mary is an autofictional character, an aspiring artist and writer, in conflict with the world around her. This presentation is part of Sarah Long’s Critic in Residence scheme at SIRIUS. Éanna Heavey: Seen/Unseen SIRIUS Saturday, 11 November 3–5pm Free; no booking required The artist Éanna Heavey examines the inherent tensions and vulnerabilities of manhood from a psychoanalytical perspective. The film Seen/Unseen (2023) discusses male experiences in today’s society through the lenses of history. It draws inspiration from Spike Island’s existence as a monastery, barracks and, most notably, a prison. It reflects the psychological struggles incarcerated people face by interweaving evidence of camaraderie among prisoners, celebrating the humanity that can emerge even in the most challenging circumstances. This presentation is part of Éanna Heavey’s residence at Spike Island in partnership with Sample-Studios and in collaboration with SIRIUS. Sarah Long and Éanna Heavey in Conversation with Miguel Amado Sarah Long and Éanna Heavey discuss their practice with SIRIUS director Miguel Amado. Specifically, they consider how they explore ideas of ‘haunting’ in Irish life and whether this can speculatively represent the Irish psyche. |

SIRIUS at Cork International Film Festival: Aoife Desmond and Frank Sweeney Aoife Desmond SIRIUS Thursday, 16 November 5-7pm Free; no booking required This programme features three films by artist Aoife Desmond, all exploring the relationship between humans and nature. sirius – harbour’s mouth (2023), commissioned by SIRIUS and shot in the Cork Harbour area, is a meditation on architecture, history, and place through a performative engagement with the SIRIUS building and its surroundings. Passage Migrants (2013) and Graving Dock Revisited (2010), shot at Dublin Port, likewise connect landscape, movement, and body, and draw on themes of labour, gender, and memory. Aoife Desmond and Helena Gouveia Monteiro in Conversation Aoife Desmond and artist Helena Gouveia Monteiro discuss the role of archaeological media in experimental cinema, questions associated with creating site-specific work, and how performance influences Desmond’s practice. Frank Sweeney: 2 Channel Land SIRIUS Friday, 17 November 3-4pm Free; no booking required The film 2 Channel Land explores the history of analogue signals spilling across the borders of Ireland and Britain. Guided by a mysterious threshold deity, we take a journey through Ireland’s borderlands in search of community. The research for the film included several interviews relating to pirate television deflector systems in Cork, country music pirate radio stations on the Irish border, and the use of church bells as early forms of communication. Frank Sweeney and Daniel Fitzpatrick in Conversation Frank Sweeney and aemi co-director Daniel Fitzpatrick discuss the history of analogue media, the film’s parodying of country music videos, Sweeney’s interest in sound and popular culture, and the role of collaboration and community building in Sweeny’s practice. 2 Channel Land was commissioned by aemi and SIRIUS. The presentation of 2 Channel Land continues until 16 December. |
