Members of the Cobh Knitting Club have been working very hard over the past three months knitting a snake, filled with recycling material, polystyrene, in a hurry to get ready for the Cobh People’s Regatta. The snake will be on display outside the BMC during the Regatta on Saturday 16th August from 10.00am to late into the afternoon and the idea is that members of the public will be given the chance to guess the exact length of Monty the Python at a cost of €1.00 per guess or three for €2.00.
A prize will be awarded to the exact guess, or nearest to exact guess of length of the snake who was officially measured from the tip of his tongue right down to the tip of his tail at Cobh Garda Station on Tuesday morning by Community Garda, Eric McCarthy. Three further prizes will also be awarded. The length has been calculated and recorded right down to the last millimeter and is being ketp a total secret.
Speaking with Cobh Knitting Club member Rose Brien Harrington she told Cobh Edition ‘I got the idea for Monty about two or three months ago when I saw a picture of a knitted snake in a magazine. I thought it would be a fun and uncomplicated project for the Knit and Knatter Squad to do. The contributing members knitted one or two stripes each using recycled or spare yarn so he cost us little or nothing to make. He is stuffed with chunks of polystyrene which was donated to us by Premier Electrix. This is packaging material which would otherwise just have been disposed of so Monty is a green python!’
The knitting club have chosen Cobh Lions Club as the beneficiary of their project to where all monies raised on Saturday will go.
The club would like to acknowledge donations of prizes from the following: Vouchers from Fota Wildlife Park, Coral, Cobh Road Train and a home hairdo by Majella Coffey.
The Knit and Knatter Squad meet at 10.30 on Wednesday mornings in Cobh Library if anyone would like to join them. Knitting or crochet, or any needlework, are welcome. Tea and biccies and great craic. All levels welcome, from beginners to experts.
