From it’s founding in 1981 Cobh Wanderers have had only adult teams – originally A.U.L. teams and a Munster Senior League team since 1990, a Munster Junior League team since 1991 and an Over 35’s team since 2008.
We have had some great days over the years including AUL 1st Division Champions in 1985/86, an AUL Shield win 1989/90 with a 1-0 win over Ballincollig, an F.A.I. Intermediate Cup semi-final appearance in 1990 losing 2-1 to Ballyfermot United, Munster Senior League Division 1 winners in 1994/95 and 1998/99, Munster Junior League Division 1 Winners in 2000/01 and Munster Senior League Premier Division Runners-Up three years in a row in 1999/2000, 2000/01 and 2001/02. Last year our Over 35’s were runners-up in the Cup and our Juniors were promoted to the Premier Division.
With these great and memorable days in mind, history was again made for the club on Friday 20th August 2010 – for the first time ever an Under 17 Cobh Wanderers A.F.C. team played a competitive match to signify a new chapter in club development and history.
The first match was an away tie against Bandon in the Under 17 League Cup. The team went ahead twice through 2 strikes by Darren Cronin but conceded almost immediately on both occasions. The game finished all square but managers Damien Rowe and Dwayne Breen will be happy with what was a good start by our new under 17 team.
Through the last few weeks the team have played 5 games in the League Cup and have equipped themselves well losing 1, drawing 2 and winning 1. The team will be playing in the Under 17 League Division 1 for the coming season and on the performances so far they will equip themselves well. We look forward to a successful season in our first of many in the Under 17 age group.
