The Cobh People’s Regatta weekend hit the ground running with the well attended Ballymore Cobh AC 4 Mile Road Race attracting a field of 239 athletes.
Representing the event sponsors, The Edge Sports Shop, Ryan Creech set a searing pace to finish in a time of 18.45. This was another highly impressive display from the Leevale AC man who claimed bronze in the 10,000m at last weekends National Track + Field Championships in Santry.
Second home on the evening was James McCarthy (19.58) of East Cork AC with David Keenan (20.48) of Newbridge AC completing the men’s first three.
Leevale AC also provided the winner of the women’s contest with a strong showing from Lorna Woulfe (24.50) who took first place ahead of popular local ladies Jessica Bruton (25.05) of Cobh Tri Club and Jennifer Goggin (25.10) whose impressive summer form continued here.
Tadgh Leahy (24.03) of Glenmore AC took the Juvenile Boys title with Ballymore Cobh AC’s Adam Hastings (26.54) catching the eye with a taking display to finish in second place.
There was no surprises in the Juvenile Girls race with Maggie Sillett (29.26) putting clear distance between herself and the rest of the field while representing the host club.
The Black and Amber singlets also featured prominently in the age group sections with Angela Leahy (31.01) finishing first in her category with club-mate Pauline Hannafin (32.31) not far behind in third place.
Lynne Doherty (29.06) and Una French (30.13) took second and third place respectively in their age bracket while Shane Meyler (24.51) was very much to the fore with a third place finish amongst his age group.
In a brilliant representation of the cross section of abilities on show, former Irish Olympian Noel Berkeley (22.44) toed the line alongside some very enthusiastic first time racers from the clubs Fit4Life section.
The extremely hard working race organising team and a supporting army of volunteers deserve great acclaim for their efforts and we can only hope that everyone who visited Cobh for this event will have left with a positive lasting impression of both the club and the town itself.
Well done and thanks to all who contributed to another memorable chapter in the Ballymore Cobh AC story.
