Transition year students in Carrignafoy Community College are taking part in the Northern Ireland Amazing the Space event in Belfast on Wednesday 21st September to represent the peace building work of the Cork/Belfast Youth Leadership Programme.
The Northern Ireland Amazing the Space event is a youth led peacebuilding initiative that will empower young people across Northern Ireland. Reflecting the United Nations Guiding Principles on Young People’s Participation in Peacebuilding, Amazing the Space will enable young people to contribute to a more peaceful society, acknowledging that they can be key agents of change in our society. To mark International Peace Day, 21st September, over 3,500 young people from hundreds of schools across Northern Ireland and the border counties will come together at the Eikon Exhibition Centre, Maze Long-Kesh site, and at a number of satellite venues to promote respect and good relations and celebrate diversity and a more peaceful future. This event will have a strong international dimension through the involvement of international organisations such as the United Nations, Peace One Day Foundation, Global Peace Foundation and Face to Faith, on the day of the event links will be made with global partners in areas of conflict, including Egypt, Palestine, Pakistan, India and Ukraine.
The Cork group will work to create their own peace pledges for a more stable and peaceful future and these will be included in the main event in Belfast.
