Cobh U16 camogie played Fr o Neills in the County league on 7th April AT Pairc Ui Chonaill. This game was played on an immaculate pitch in brilliant sunshine and in fairness to both teams this was an excellent game of Camogie well contested from start to finish. Cobh started well with a lot of the early possession and took the lead through a pointed free from Aoife O Connor who added two further frees in the first 15 minutes to leave the score 0-3 apiece. Play was flowing from end to end and O Neills went in front with a rather fortuitous goal but Cobh responded with a fine Shannid McGrath goal after good play from captain Chloe Cashman and Laura Stafford. Cobhwere passing the ball well and supporting each other and after another good passing move from Emma Moran & Jen Mccarthy Toni Butler rattled over a good point. This was followed by another point from the same player after been set up by Ellen Stafford. Cobh levelled the scores on the Half time whistle from a free by Aoife O Connor after a push on Orna McCarthy was penalised by the referee. Ht Cobh 1-6 V O Neills 2-3
Cobh were fast out of the blocks in the second half with a fast ball from midfield was grabbed by Toni Butler who proceeded to leave the full back for dead before striking home an unstoppable shot for the goal of the game. Cobh continued to attack and tacked on an Aoife o Connor point from play to lead by four. O Neills then enjoyed a purple patch and tacked over 3 points mostly from free’s in the next fifteen minutes. Back came Cobh after a fine Clodagh Tibbits clearance was worked down to Ashling Bardley who played a great pass to Rebecca Crotty inside the 14 who made no mistake in guiding the ball home to put Cobh back in front. Cobh Defence was now under pressure but good work from Tara Looney and Clodagh Tibbits made life difficult for O Neills but O Neills did manage 2 free’s to leave just 2 points between them. Cobh were un fortunate when O Neills struck with a goal to lead by a point with 2 minutes to go. Despite every effort Cobh were unable to get an equaliser their play deserved and lost out by the narrowest of Margins on a score of Cobh 3-7 V O Neills 3-8.
Cobh whilst been disappointed with the result should be very pleased with the standard of the camogie played.
Next up Home to Killeagh on Tuesday 28th April
