Sirius Arts Centre will be hosting a musical participation event, Sacred Harp / Shape Note Singing Workshop on the 18th of Sept at 7.30pm (free event). Sacred Harp singing has been part of the musical fabric of Cork City since 2010. Sacred Harp music is a four-part a cappella music that dates from the 16th through to the 20th centuries and is characterised by haunting harmonies, traditional modes, raucous songs, serene hymns, fast fugues, and high-energy anthems. The notation is written in shapes that correspond to degrees of the scale, making it easy to sight-sing, even for those with little musical experience.
This is not a gig, it is a group participation event where newcomers and beginners are welcome to join in. Experience is not a requirement, this is music for anyone who wants to sing. Sirius Arts Centre hopes to encourage the community to play a role in their local cultural scene on what will be a joyful night.
