This week St Colman’s Cathedral has launched a unique opportunity for Parishioners to experience their very own Camino spiritual journey.
The Cathedral Camino is inspired by the popular Camino or “Way” to the shrine of Saint James the Apostle in northern Spain. This shrine is also known as Santiago de Compostela. Walking on this Way has seen a resurgence of popularity in recent years. A former Bishop of Cloyne whose relics are in this Cathedral was a Blessed Thaddeus McCarthy, who journeyed on the Camino twice in the 15th century.
As Christians we believe that life is a journey with God as our ultimate goal and fulfilment. Our Christians lives are marked by significant events and celebrations. We celebrate the sacraments and are called to live out our Baptismal calling. We invite visitors to St Colman’s Cathedral to embark on a journey of rediscovery, marked by 9 scallop shells, representing the 7 sacraments as well as the call to Religious life and our journey to eternal life through death and resurrection. Thus a visit to the Cathedral can be a reminder of our Faith journey.
While doing their journey pilgrims can spend as much time as they like at each scallop, perhaps remembering those preparing for sacraments or give a prayer of gratitude for receiving each sacrament but praying for vocations at scallop numbers VI and VII. It is up to each individual, maybe some might like to say a decade of the rosary at every second one i.e. I, III, V, VII and IX.
Cathedral Camino leaflets are available at the first scallop shell located at the Baptismal shrine, on the left hand side aisle of the Cathedral entrance.
