Cork Sports Partnership has relaunched its popular exercise programme after lockdown with participants across the groups seeing a mean reduction in their Body Mass Index (BMI) after taking part.
Project WeightLoss is a community-based exercise intervention programme targeted at individuals who are currently overweight and inactive. Anyone with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 25 is eligible to apply for the programme. Project WeightLoss has been developed by the HSE locally, Leisureworld Cork and Cork Sports Partnership.
The 6-week summer programme will move to outdoor venues with 8 locations in Cork and an online option available for those in other parts of Cork City & County.
The outdoor locations include Mallow, Carrigaline, Riverstick, Farranree, Douglas, Ballinacarriga with two venues in Beara – Castletownbere & Derrymihan.
The weekly classes are delivered by exercise professionals, who receive further training from the HSE, LeisureWold Cork & Cork Sports Partnership on programme content and delivery. Classes consist of structured exercise sessions, with individuals experiencing exercise appropriate to their own needs and ability in a fun and supportive environment.
The cost of the 6-week programme is €50. For those that participate in the summer programme, a place will be reserved for them in the sought after 12-week programme in September.
Eoin Kaar, Project Lead for the WellComm Active Initiative with the Cork Sports Partnership said: “It’s great to be able to offer the Project WeightLoss classes in an outdoor setting again following our recent online only offerings. After the last programme with the support of the Project WeightLoss tutors, participants across all of our groups saw a mean reduction in their Body Mass Index (BMI), as well as increased physical activity levels. The small group settings allow participants to get to know one another and offer their support and encouragement throughout, it has a huge impact on motivation levels. We can’t wait to see how everyone progresses over the coming weeks, we know that Project WeightLoss makes a real difference to the mental and physical health of those taking part, so we’re delighted to be back”.
Project Weightloss is being rolled out as part of WellComm Active, an important new community health and wellbeing initiative across Cork to help people with physical activity, weight management and healthy eating.
