Excitement is building at Cork City FC ahead of Ireland’s first match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup next week. Former squad member Denise O’Sullivan is part of the first ever Ireland team to take part in the tournament which also includes Cork footballer Megan Connolly.
The club is confident that Ireland’s involvement in this World Cup will inspire other young girls to pursue a career in football. Denise started her journey in senior football with Cork Women’s FC and is already a shining light for many around the city and county.
Danny Murphy, who has been the manager of the women’s first team for the last year, was recently promoted to Head of Women’s Football at Cork City FC. The role, which is a first for the club, includes oversight of all women’s football at the club, including the first team and academy teams.
Danny is planning to place a greater emphasis on the academy and increase female membership at the club. The club also introduced two girls only ‘Corky Camps’ this summer in a bid to encourage girls at a young age to get involved in football.
“There is a real sense of excitement amongst the Cork City women’s team as Ireland prepares for the World Cup. We would like to wish Cork players Denise O’Sullivan and Megan Connolly the very best of luck in the tournament. We are proud to have seen Denise progress from her days at Cork Women’s FC to an elite level of playing and now representing her country in Ireland’s first ever Women’s World Cup. Our players are really proud of her achievements and she is an inspiration for so many young players.”
Ireland faces Australia on July 20th, Canada on July 26th and Nigeria on July 31st.
