Following a meeting between the Mayor of Cobh and Cobh & Harbour Chamber it was agreed that the Mayor would host a meeting of interested bodies to find ways to improve quality and coverage of Christmas Lighting in the town for 2010 and beyond.
The erection of suitable quality lighting will only be possible with considerable investment. Although some grant aid may be available for new lights the town will have to raise a minimum of 15,000 euro itself to begin the annual improvement initiative.
Other towns like Midleton, Carrigaline and elsewhere have made concerted efforts in recent years to decorate their buildings and streets leading up to Christmas festivities. It will require a considerable effort and fundraising to bring Cobh into line with other towns in Cork. To this end we are asking the community to come forward with any suggestions or ideas about how to go forward and raise funds for this project. The Christmas Lights are an important part of the Christmas season. Both locals and visitors appreciate and enjoy the twinkle and atmosphere the lights give and which does make the town more attractive. If we cannot raise the much needed funds then the existing inadequate lights will have to suffice.
Please forward your ideas to christmaslightscobh@gmail.com or letters to Christmas Lights Committee, Old Yacht Club, Cobh.
