Minor football County Semi-final : Cobh 3-07 Ilen Rovers 3-10. The Cobh minors put up a gallant show before going under to a strong Ilen Rvrs side on Sunday at Balineen. Early on it looked like the Rovers would win easily as they streaked into a lead of 1-05 to 0-02 but the fighting spirit of this Cobh team really shone out in the second half. Cobh attacked from the throw in and soon had the ball in the net but Mark Foleys’ effort was deemed to be a square ball, by a referee who was determined to be the centre of attention throughout the game and who made some very strange calls against both teams over the hour. From the clearance following the square ball, Ilen moved up the pitch and had earned a penalty kick within seconds, this was dispatched to the net for Rovers by Dan MacEoin, who starred for the Cork minors in the All-Ireland back in September. Most of the Rovers supporters thought that the penalty goal meant the game was over but anyone who has followed this particular bunch of Cobh players knows that, regardless of the score, these lads never give up. A couple of points were followed by goals from John Flanagan and Cian Spriggs and with Shane Hallahan completely dominating the midfield area Cobh brought the deficit back to a goal with five minutes to go. Ilen goaled in a breakaway attack and were leading by 7points as full time approached but again Cobh came back with a point and an excellent penalty slotted home by Cian Spriggs. Unfortunately, time ran out on the Cobh lads, but no honour was lost in defeat on this occasion as the Cobh lads had put up a strong, disciplined and skilful show against their much vaunted opponents. Well done to all the players and selectors involved and best of luck in the forthcoming hurling and football league finals.
