Sunday 3rd September brought the Spike Island Jailbreak Triathlon event to Cobh.

Ballymore Cobh A.C. athletes Maeve Macilwraith, Sonia O’Sullivan, Fergal Quinlan, Will Dunne (new pb) and Brendan Ryan put in great individual performances, as did our triumvirate of Orla O’Rourke, Louise Dunne and Stephen Pender.

The latter 3 competed in the relay event and put in barnstorming performances to win it outright. Top of the class, you 3!

Sun. 18th Sep. saw several members compete in the East Cork Cross Country Championships in Conna.

Among them were Fiona Downey, Alma Worrall, Ruth Phelan, Jennifer Montague, Carol Leahy, Mary De Barra, Tobias Lehnhoff, Trevor Cummins, David Fleming, Lucas Keating, Liam Hurley and Peter Howie.

Congratulations to Fiona Downey and Mary De Barra who ran superbly and placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Masters class.

Sun. 18th Sep. was a busy day on the Cork athletics scene as it was also the date of the Charleville International Half Marathon.

A runner’s delight of 13.1 miles on an almost completely flat course was always going to be a crowd-puller, and so it turned out, with a grand total of 964 athletes crossing the finish line.

Among these were Ballymore Cobh participants Anne Marie Downing with a personal best (pb), Jan Verwey, Sarah Ahern, Maria Coffey (pb), Stephen Ryan (pb) and Orla O’Rourke placing an excellent 2nd O/50 and a stellar 6th place Female overall amongst some high-class female athletes, including Olympian Lizzie Lee.

Finally, it’s great to see our large group of Fit4Life participants moving up in distance with relative ease as their training increases.

Keep up the great work, all. You’re reaping the dividends already.
