The rain didn’t deter the people of Cobh yesterday as hundreds turned out to support the annual ‘Barrack Hill Ball Roll’ which takes place every August Bank Holiday in aid of charities Brainwave Ireland and Cancer Research. Thousands of tennis ball sized plastic balls are let loose at the top of Cobh’s steepest hill, Barrack Hill and roll right to the end where the first five through a single pipe are deemed winners and receive cash prizes from €500 downwards.
This year, before the main Ball Roll, there were other events like Crab Fishing competitions for the kids, a Family Treasure Hunt around the streets of Cobh and a Big Ball Uphill challenge. Speaking at the prize giving afterwards, both former Mayor of Cobh, Cllr Paddy Whitty and organiser Cllr Paddy Histon thanked and paid tribute to the people of Cobh and business owners for their continued support of this event. A special thank you was given to the residents of Barrack Hill for their assistance and co-operation.
