As part of Heritage week we had a super evening with Jim Wilson at Cuskinny Marsh Nature Reserve. A record crowd with nearly 100 people learned about the soprano, long eared, horseshoe, pipistrelle bats and much more. Jim took us from the car park by the bay along the Tay road to the lagoon. He showed us various birds and told their stories about migratory patterns and territorial behaviour. The sun set gradually and soon there were shrieks of delight as the bats swooped through the trees in the forest seeking out food. Sincere thanks to Jim for sharing his knowledge and all the boys & girls for their very interesting questions.

On Sunday Coastwatch Ireland launched their Coastal Survey training in beautiful Cuskinny. Simon Coveney, Minister with responsibility for Marine Environment came down and launched the programme. Under the guidance of Karin Dubsky Coastwatch and Bernadette Connolly Cork Environmental Forum we gathered data along the shore and the splash zone categorising shells, seaweeds, fish and litter. The plan is to survey coastal areas in 500m stretches from 15th September to 15th October so if you’re interested please get in touch with us email cobhtidytowns@gmail.com We have a lot of coast to cover on Great Island !
