Cobh 4-03 Sars 3-05. After a tense game which saw both sides goal in injury time to take the game into extra time the U16 girls from Cobh came out on top by the narrowest of margins in the County league final on Saturday, 26th of November. The Cobh ‘cailíns with camáns’ did their families, coaches and club proud as they battled against their more experienced opponents to bring a County title back home for the first time in many years. The procession of cars through the town on the teams’ return over the bridge was a fitting tribute to the players.
Cobh took the lead in the first half with a goal from Niamh Meaney and points from Erica Field and Megan Foley but Sars pegged us back with a goal of their own just before half-time. Sars took control of the game early in the second with three unanswered points and things looked bleak for Cobh. But these girls never stopped fighting and they responded with a goal from Kate Ronan. The sides were level with the thirty minutes of the second half already played when Cobh scored through Megan Foley following a goalmouth scramble, but, as the Cobh followers celebrated, Sars launched one more attack and with the very last puck of the sliotar they too goaled to send the game into extra time.
Cobh started well in the first ten minute period with Katie Sheehan notching a goal and Erica Field getting a point to give them a four point lead at the break. Sars again came back and they finally found the net in the final minute of extra time to leave just a single point between the sides. Thankfully for the Cobh team and followers, this time around the girls kept their composure and ran out the last few seconds without giving Sars a shot on goal, and so, the celebrations began. Captain, Ellen Spriggs, received the cup on behalf of her team-mates and to top things off, thirteen year old Aoife Sheehan received the ‘player of the match’ award for her outstanding performance at full and centre back in the final.
This was not only a great win for the U16 camogie team but for the camogie club as a whole. In only their third full year back in competition to be winning at this level is a testament to all the great work being done by the officials, coaches and players in the club. Well done to all involved and here’s looking forward to more great days on the camogie horizon for the girls in green (and yellow! ).
