Cobh U16 camogie started their Cork county championship with a great win under lights in Cobh on Tuesday 23rd Sept against Na Piarsaigh. This was a thrilling game from start to finish. Cobh started well and had an early point from Katelynn Quinlann. Cobh worked a fine goal shortly after from Katelynn to help them settle into the game. Na Piarsaigh came back well and had the next 2 points to narrow Cobh’s lead. Na Piarsaigh continued to create chances but the Cobh defence with Jess Blake, Sorcha McKeown and Emma Moran clearing their lines kept them at bay. Cobh were next to score with a well pointed free from Aoife Sheehan quickly followed by another point from play by Katelynn Quinlann to see cobh lead 1-3 V 0-2. Cobh continued to have the better possession but Na Piarsaigh were very direct in attack and scored 2 goals in quick succession, the first rather lucky but the second a fine goal to give them the lead. Na Piarsaigh lead 2-3 v 1-3 at half time but Cobhcould consider themselves unlucky to be behind.
Cobh started the second half slowly with Na Piarsaigh adding a goal after 7 minutes to increase their lead. The game was now been played at a frantic pace and Cobh won a 21 yard free after a foul on Jen McCarthy. Despite a packed goal line Katelynn Quinlann cracked an unstoppable shot to the net to bring Cobh back into the game. The cobh Half back line of Ellen Stafford, Aoife Sheehan and Sophie Maher were now on top and providing great ball to their forwards. Cobh goaled again after good work by Aoife Sheehan and Aggie Douglas provided another chance for Katelynn which she duly converted to make the game even.

Cobh were playing with great spirit with Chloe Cashman, Aoife O Connor, Ashling Bardsley, Toni Butler and Laura Stafford putting in huge effort cobh continued to create chances. Aoife Sheehan bursting out of defence found Megan Foley who hit a great shot from 60 yards all the way to net to put Cobh back in the lead.

The Cobh defence continued to keep Na Piarsaigh out with a fine save by Cloddagh Tibbitts and good clearances by Emma Moran and Sorcha Mckeown. However Na Piarsaigh playing great camogie continued to press and won a penalty from which they scored a point which they followed with another point to leave the bare minimum in it. Cobh showing great courage were fighting for their lives and after hard work Laura Stafford won a free which Aoife Sheehan expertly converted from 45 metres to give them a 2 point lead . Cobh showing their fitness continued to press and won another free when Megan Foley was brought down close to goal, Aoife Sheehan again converted. Cobh were not to be denied and won on a final score of Cobh 4-6 v Na Piarsaigh 3-5.

Both teams deserve great credit for a superb game of Camogie. Cobh will be delighted with this win, it took a huge team effort under severe pressure at times to win this game but their fitness, spirit and skill saw them through.
