Minors, the pinnacle of all young playing careers, came to fruition this spring for our camogie girls. A year, which, to be honest is at odds with all others due to exams, started in earnest, on the 12th March at home V’s Na Piarsiagh, this turned out to be match of the tournament, we started tentatively enough, being the first game of the season, but soon took the game to our visitors, but never really taking command. Half time saw us go in behind by 2 points The second half was a war of attrition and in fairness to our girls they soaked up a lot of pressure and with 5 minutes left found ourselves down by 2 points, a quick coaching change and up pops Aoife Sheehan with a well worked goal, which stunned the opposition so much it was game over in one stroke. As important were our earlier scores from Erica Field 1.03 Kate Ronan 1.00 and Katelynn Quinlan 0.01.and great performances by Ellen O Regan, Cliona Mc Grath, Nicole Sawani, Shauna Mc Crossan-Donnachie, Niamh Damery and Caoimhe Phelan
Next up we were away to Charleville and found ourselves in a good solid game but exceptionally bad refereeing put paid to any chances of a good camogie game showing up on an otherwise dull day only brightened by great performances by Sorcha Mc Keown Aoife Sheehan, Niamh Meaney Meadbh Damery, Aggy Douglas and Laura Stanton
Two weeks later we found ourselves on the road again, this time Balinora was the destination. Again, the extra space in these 13 a-side games didn’t seem to suit us, never really in touch with our hosts we finished the stronger but still went down on a scoreline of 5.06 to 2.02.
last league game was against, none other than Carrigtohill, A big game, in either league or championship, but nonetheless a game which had to be won. Not only Pride, but bragging rights were the main prize on offer tonight. This was a coming of age game, if there ever was one. Absolutely fantastic defending, coupled with that gritty, never say die attitude, that these girls have shown in abundance since an early age and of course not to mention the performance of the season by Megan Foley saw off any spirited attempt by our visitors to spoil this well deserved win, Fabulous performances by Helen Maher, Lauren Van Wijnen, Ellen Spriggs Lauren Mansworth with great scores by Niamh M, Shauna, Kate, Erica and Katelynn to gain a winning scoreline of 4.04 to 1.02.
Well done to all involved and roll on the Championship. Good luck to our minors who now take part in the Junior league.
