Once again, the Cobh Classic Car Club put on an event that will be remembered. Last Saturday the club held it’s annual Classic Car Event in Cobh attracting over forty unique and historic cars from all over Ireland, the UK and Continental Europe. As usual the car were on display outside of the Commodore Hotel in the morning before all embarked on a scenic drive through East Cork, and stopping off in Shanagarry at the famous Ballymaloe Cookery School and gardens.
Later in the afternoon all motorists and their vehicles returned to Cobh for lunch and the prizegiving ceremony at the Commodore Hotel and once again the cars on display drew huge crowds of people into the town centre for the afternoon viewing session. Also berthed in Cobh was the magnificent liner, Ruby Princess with 4800 passengers and crew onboard, which added a great athmosphere to the already bustling streets.
Cars on show this year dated from an 1909 Minevra owened by Alan Wilson from Cork to an 1974 Ford Escort MK1 and MGB Roadster also from 1974 owned by Noel ferriter and Alan Kavanagh respectively, also both from Cork. Other cars on show included an 1938 Austin 10/4, a 1938 Rolls Royce, a 1925 Hudson Super 6 and a 1956 Wolseley Y.
Some of the winners on the day were Paddy Burns from Blackrock, Cork for the ‘Best On Show, a 1938 Rolls Royce and Eric Byrne from Dublin who drove the furthest to the rally in his 1973 Morgan with Martin Donnelley close behind in his 1976 Morgan.
The Cobh Classic Car Club is a wonderful pastime for classic car lovers and new members are always welcome. The club meet on the second Monday of each month at 8.00pm in the Commodore Hotel. Membership is only €20.00
