Cobh Community Drugs Project is hosting an open night and talk by an addiction counsellor on ‘Addiction and the effect it has on Families’ Toni Malone an addiction counsellor in Tabor Lodge treatment centre will discuss how addiction can effect families with a view to running a more in depth four week programme which will look at different topics relating to addiction including
• Addiction and denial ( How families can be in deni…al when someone in their family is misusing drugs or alcohol)
• Enabling: How as family members we can make it easier for the addicted person to keep using by constantly making excuses for them, cleaning up after them, ignoring our own needs.
• Family Roles: This session will look at how families take on different roles when someone is misusing drugs and alcohol and how this can affect different members of the family.
• Intervention: This session will look at how best to approach someone in the family who may be misusing drugs or alcohol.
The open night will give people an understanding of the effect addiction can have on the whole family. It will also provide people with a taster of the following four weeks where each topic will be discussed in depth.
