Cúl Camp: The annual Gaa summer camp was held last week, with the biggest ever participation, involving 165 young girls and boys, 15 coaches and a number of part-time volunteers combining to make it a very successful event. With Jim Cronin coordinating the camp and school’s Gaa coach Christy Kidney supervising all coaching activity the camp was very professionally run and as a result all involved had a great time. The participants received instruction in hurling, football and also played rounders during the week, while each group were also taught about the importance of healthy eating in sport and life in general. The weather was the only thing that left us down, on occasion, but even when it did the coaches were resilient enough to have quizzes, activity sheets and other work prepared to keep the participants entertained. A special word of thanks to Tom Hennessey, Gaa pavilion caretaker, for his help during the week and to the ladies from the camogie club who volunteered their time throughout the camp. The group were delighted to meet with Cork camogie and ladies football star, Mary O’Connor on Thursday, as well as Cork senior footballer Patrick Kelly and to top it off Aisake Ó hAilpín called in to bring the week to an exciting finish on Friday. Well done to all involved.
U12 Hurling: With four games played in the East Cork league our return has been three wins and one loss. We started off with an easy victory away to Cloyne. Carrignavar at home were a much different proposition, try as we might on the night we ended up two points behind at the final whistle when a last gasp effort from Cobh grazed the upright and went wide. In round 3 we were away to Erin’s Own. Our fellas have a good record against the Glounthane outfit in recent times and this joust was no different, that said, it wasn’t a foregone conclusion. Round 4 saw Kiltha Óg come to Cobh and ended with a Cobh win on the score line of 5-08 to 3-05. With a panel of 17 to pick from injuries, sickness and general fatigue from the Cúl Camp the lads had to draw on all their experience to put the visitors to the sword. The firepower of Adam O’Donovan 3 goals, Niall Spriggs 1-06 Dylan Higgins 1 goal and Neil Harte 2 points and the defence spine of Pádi Kearney, Odhran Kidney-Power and captain fantastic Max Kahn made sure it was victory number 3 out 4, with two games left to play. Well done lads, keep up the good work. A special word of thanks to Nick O’Callaghan for refereeing the home games.
