Cobh under 16 hurlers defeat Cloyne on Tuesday 8th in Pairc Ui Chonaill 3-8 to 2-9.
Following on from last week’s win over St. Vincent’s the exam break now comes into force until the end of June.Best of luck to all Cobh GAA players in their exams.

Junior Hurling
Cobh record first win in the East Cork, Cavanagh’s of Fermoy Sponsored, Junior Hurling League after a great victory over a strong Killdorrery side.The Cobh side, who so far have tasted 3 defeats and a draw, played extremely well and the benefits of more and more training sessions in the back pocket was very evident to see. 

Cobh Looked comfortable in the opening exchanges and were first to raise the white flag with scores from the lively Aidan O’Rourke and Brian Aherne. However, Cobh’s over eagerness in defense and lack of composure in the tackle allowed Killdorrery to keep the game tight as they pointed some easy free’s. Killdorrery took the lead in this game after ten minutes on the clock with all of their scores coming from dead ball situations. Cobh would have to improve on their discipline as they encountered an excellent free taker in the Killdorrery Centre Forward. Cobh registered a fantastic point in the first half as the ball was worked well into the forward line. Dave Mc Carthey caught a great ball in the corner of the pitch and found Aidan O Rourke with a good pass. Aidan then had the calm head to slot the ball back to Brian Aherne who was in a better position and Brian grasped the opportunity with both hands to bisect the post.

Killdorrery then registered their first point from play and added another free to make it 0-6 points to 0-4 in favour of the north Cork men after 20 minutes played. Both sides registered wides from dead ball situations until Dave Mc Carthey raised the white flag again after more great work on the right hand side. Darragh O’ Keeffe worked well in the middle of the park to win a free which allowed Aidan O’Rourke to score yet another point. At this stage, both sides discipline was beginning to slip as tempers raised which allowed both teams to add to the scoreboard from set pieces. Liam Greaney knocked over a long range effort and Aidan O’Rourke notched yet another point after more good work from Dave Mc Carthey. Killdorrery too added to the scoreboard as the centre forwards superb free taking abilities was becoming very apparent. Cobh entered the break trailing 0-9 to 0-11.

Cobh started the second half the brighter team again and some good work from the Cobh forwards caused the Killdorrery men to concede frees. Liam Greaney scored one from outside the 65 while Aidan O’Rourke pointed from the 45 yard line. Cobh drawing level for the first time in this contest. Unfortunately the lead was to be taken back by Killdorrery, who pointed two more frees to give them the cushion again. Lee Mc Dermott who was defending very well, held off the Killdorrery attack for so long but was unfortunate as Killdorrery found the free man to score from play.

Killdorrery then registered another point from open play and were beginning to look like they would go on to win it. Cobh looked to the bench to liven things up and Ger Meaney and Adam Mc Carthey were brought into the action. Cobh registered five points in succession to take the lead for the first time in the tie. Cobh being in these situations on a number of occasions before stayed calm and professional on this occasion to hold off any Killdorrery attack. Winning the puck out in the middle of the park allowed the Cobh men to keep the ball in the oppositions half of the pitch and Cobh were rewarded for their effort when Aidan O’Rourke found the open Dave Mac who slotted home from the 13 yard line.

Killdorrery never gave in and pushed hard to try for a goal in the closing stages but the Cobh defenders guarded the house well and limited the Avondhu men to only two more frees. Kildorrery closed the gap to two points so it was vital to keep possession for the harbour side. Conor Mc Dowell did superb to find Steven Kearny on the wing from a short puck out which ensured Cobh hung on to possession for the closing stages. In the dying minutes Cobh registered two wides in a row but this was to be enough as it prevented the ball from entering the Cobh Danger zone. As the full time whistle blew the Cobh men can be very proud of the effort and determination showed to see out this tight affair.

Busy June possibly ahead for U14’s

The next few weeks will see several U14 Hurling Games. First  we travel to Bride Rovers, and then we play Youghal in Cobh. The following Thursday will likely see the start of the U14 Hurling Championship where we will again take on Mayfield in the first round. We also have some hurling league matches to play (Nemo, Kilta Og and Watergrasshill) and will organise these depending on progress in Hurling and Football Championship. We will be Hurling training each Monday to prepare for these games.

June will also see the start of the U14 Football championship and number of football league games. We will organise a second nights training (as soon as the school term finishes), and this will concentrate on Football (possible start Friday June 1st ).
