Cobh GAA Notes 25th March

Our U14 Footballers played their  fourth game in the U14 league. The sequence of games this year has been tough for us, as we have already faced two of the three unbeaten teams in the league, and on Saturday we made the trip to Kinsale, the third unbeaten team. We produced our best team performance of the season so far. In the first half, despite Kinsale having a lot of possession, our hard working back six limited them to just 5 points, and we scored 4 points to leave us just a point behind at the break. At half time we made some changes to try and win more possession as we felt, with some little improvement, and a little luck,  the game was within our reach.  The second half saw us improve our possession and despite the setback of an unfortunate early goal against us, we continued to add points. When the Kinsale keeper  spilled a long range shot and Barry Chandler pounced to score a goal we were in front by a point. However Kinsale reply was almost immediate and they swept the ball forward and  scored what was certainly the goal of the match. We were to have one more chance and with almost the last kick of the game when we won a penalty, but unfortunately missed that opportunity to snatch the victory we deserved. Best overall team contribution was from Barry Chandler who kept a clean sheet whilst in goals, and when moved outfield for the second half pounced on the Kinsale keepers mistake to score our only goal. Overall this was a fine team performance, with some good individual moments, and with a little more luck it could have been a fine victory. More than anything during this game we lacked some confidence, which is not that surprising given our last two results. If we can take some confidence from this good performance, we can look forward  to the remaining league games and football championship. Final Score : Kinsale 2-6, Cobh 1-7.

U14 Hurling : Attention for the U14’s now turns to Hurling with our first league match next weekend away to St Catherines. We will have 4 hurling league games during April, and April will also see the Feile na nGael Hurling Championship with the opportunity to be one of two teams to represent Cork in the Nationals Feile Finals (which will be in Dublin) up for grabs. If we are successful in this Feile this could mean two games a week for  our U14 hurlers during April. We will continue to provide football training for our U14’s (especially for those who only play Gaelic football)  but are asking the U14 panel to prioritise hurling over the next few weeks in order to build on our success last year.  Our focus on U14 Football will return during  May and June when some more Football League games and the Football championship are scheduled to happen.

u16 Hurling

Cobh 4-9 Carrignavar 2-14
Under 16 hurlers got their season off to an exciting winning start with a one point win over a fancied Carrignabhfear in the top pitch on Wednesday.Youngsters Niall Spriggs,Paidi Kearney,Adam O’Donovan and Dave O’Connor put in a great hour’s work while Sean O’Connell was outstanding in defence alongside Darragh Kelleher and Patrick Fingleton in midfield.2 goals from Jordan Griffin and one from Liam Harte in the first half and another from Dave O’Connor in the second gave Cobh the narrowest of winning margins in an entertaining hour’s hurling.

u21 Football

Cobh miss out on progression in the East Cork fé 21 Football championship after defeat to St Catherines in Dungourney. Although the sun was shining brightly both teams had to deal with a strong wind, St. Catherines had the wind advantage in the first half and Cobh played well to stay within a 3 point deficit of the opposition at the halfway stage. Despite having the wind on their side in the second half, Cobh failed to capitalize on a number of chances and the St, Catherines men played well to hold out for victory. Players to play well for Cobh Included Like Curran and Kieran Histon who were consistently solid at the back and in the middle of the park. Aidan O’Rourke put in a good shift up front and Sean Wright who kept Cobh in the game with his accurate placed ball kicking
