With reference to article entitled “Sherlock welcomes €70,000 for Cobh Community Centre” published in Cobh Edition on 7th January 2015.
The article may have given people the impression that the Government has given the Community Centre a cash injection of €70,000. This money is actually our Community Services Programme funding which we receive each year through POBAL solely for the purposes of funding the salaries of staff at the Centre.
While this funding is an essential part of our general funding, we still have to find money to fund our mortgage repayments and running costs of the Centre. This money is raised through room hire, Car Boot Sales, Bingo and other fundraising activities. While we do everything to keep costs to a minimum, without the income from this fundraising activity our room hire rates would have to increase .
