Cobh Ramblers enjoyed a successful start to their 2010 Newstalk A Championship Group 2 campaign with a 1-0 victory over Andy Myler’s Shamrock Rovers at St.Colman’s Park on Saturday when Shane Geasley struck from inside the six yard box twenty five minutes into the second half to secure all three points for the Rams who now, after only one game, have half of the points they accumulated from the entire 2009 season.
Shamrock Rovers started the better side and for the first thirty minutes had the Ramblers defence under severe pressure. Indeed, had Rovers been able to captialise and snatch their opportunities they
could easily have been three up at half time. They did however manage to get the ball into the Ramblers net only for referee Keith Callanan to disallow the goal due to climbing by one of the Rovers’ strikers. Seeing the ball hit the back of the net must have brought back hard memories for Ramblers who drew 1-1 with Rovers at St’Colman’s Park last season and suffered a 2-0 defeat in Dublin.
Whatever Manager Dave Hill said to his young Ramblers side in the dressing room at half time, it certainly did the trick and it was evident from the kick-off that this seventeen and eighteen year old team were up for the game and began to take it to Rovers. Ramblers defender Peter Nolan played a blinder and virtually nothing got past him throughout the game, with Pierce Donnachie emulating the defenders passion up front. Ramblers keeper Kevin McCarthy had his work cut out in the first half and without doubt kept Ramblers in the game. Shane Geasley got the breakthrough on the 69th minute after the ball was crossed in high from the right, followed by a goalmouth scramble which left Geasley with the opportunity to bury the ball right-footed and low past Rovers’ keeper Craigh Hughes. Rovers could easliy have gotten an equaliser within a minute of Ramblers scoring when a back pass to keeper McCarthy left him chasing the ball toward his own net only to dive and push it out past the post for a corner as it was inches away from crossing the line thus saving his blushes and the wrath of Manager Dave Hill.
With only the one game gone anticipation is high that Ramblers can find a way back into the League Of Ireland proper and Saturday’s victory over last years Group 2 winners Rovers has added to speculation that this young team can bring Cobh Ramblers back to where they belong. It certainly couldn’t have been a better start to the season!
Next game for Ramblers is away to Bray Wanderers on Sunday 29th May with a 2.00pm kick-off at the Carlisle Ground.
