“Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is a worldwide youth movement with the stated aim of supporting young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, that they may play constructive roles in society.”
4th Cork Cobh Sea Scouts has embarked on a fundraising initiative for the upkeep of their facilities along the holy ground in Cobh. Some of the facilities and equipment are in need of maintenance & upgrading in order to safely continue with our Scouting Activities and youth work.
Formed in the late 1970’s in Bellevue school in Cobh the troop today has nearly 60-70 youth members across four sections consisting of four groups, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Ventures supported by over20 volunteer adult leaders.
The existing boathouse was once home to the from Queenstown RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) lifeboat station from 1866 to 1920. The station was established by the institution in 1866 as several wrecks with loss of life had occurred in the vicinity of Cork Harbour. The 34-ft 10-oared Lifeboat “Quiver No.2”, designed to right itself if over-turned, was publically named and launched on the 22nd of October 1866
Later the premises was used was used as the “Clayton Love Lobster Pools” for the Trans-Atlantic Liner Trade at that Period. From the 1950’s to the 1970’s
Between 1984 and 1987, it was used by a well known local mariner, to build his 45ft Steel-hulled cruise yacht, which has sailed to many destinations including Iceland and Russia.
In 1987, Cobh Sea Scouts were fortunate enough to have a good Parents & Friends Committee who succeeded in purchasing this ideal location for the premises of the Sea Scout Troop. The old corrugated roofing was replaced by reinforced concrete beams which would later support the upper level. In 1997, work began on the upstairs section of the hall. Upstairs is now the meeting place of all 4 sections of the troop (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts & Ventures) and downstairs is kept as a boathouse.
We will be holding a number of fundraising events over the coming months and while cognisant of the fact that times are tough, we would be very grateful for any support or assistance during this period.
