The Annual 7-Aside Soccer Blitz took place on Saturday 2nd July at Old Church Park. In glorious sunshine 10 teams of 10 players arrived at Old Church Park for the 12 o’clock kick off. With the 2 groups set up & thefirst few games completed it was obvious that last year’s winners, The Cons, were not going to relinquish their crown without a fight.
Along with The Cons in group 1 were Five-O, Val Keenan, Ken Gill & Unknowns. The champions won the group winning all 4 games, scoring 10 goals & not conceding a single goal. With a few additions to last year’s team they were looking like winners all over. The top 2 qualify for the semi-finals & The Cons were joined by Five-O who finished on 7 points Last year’s runners-up Fanatics were in Group 2 along with Ryans, Darren Tallon, Netbusters & John Hannon. Fanatics won the group with 14 goals scored & 5 goals against with Dave Abbott lethal in front of goal. Joining them in the semi-finals were group runners-up Ryans. The semi-final pairings brought The Cons against Ryans & Fanatics against Five-O.
The Cons found it difficult to score after going 1 down to Ryans. When they eventually did equalise they were immediately caught out at the back as Ryans scored their second & winning goal. Fanatics found their semi-final with Five-O a more straight forward affair winning 4-0, Five-O running out of steam after a long day in the scorching sun. The final was a closely contested game with few scoring chances but both sides did score & at the final whistle the score was 1 -1. The dreaded penalty shootout was the only way to divide the teams. After the first five penalties the sides were still level & it wasn’t until after 5 more penalties that Fanatics came out victorious.
Congratulations to Fanatics on winning the Cobh Wanderers A.F.C. Annual Soccer Blitz 2011 & commiserations to Ryans who put up a gallant fight in the final. We would like to thank everyone who took part in this year’s competition & hope that you will all come back next year. The presentations to the winning & runner-up teams were made in Jack Doyle’s Bar & we would like to thank all at Jack Doyle’s for their continued support for the tournament. A special thanks must also go to the 2 referees on the day Frank O’Neill & Pat Welch who officiated all day in a calm & just manner.
