Residents of Cobh were invited to have their cholesterol levels tested during the weekend in the Commodore Hotel as part of the ‘it takes a town’ flora pro-activ cholesterol-lowering challenge which will officially be launched in January. Over two hundred people were tested during the weekend and those with an elevated cholesterol reading will be invited to enrol in a three week cholesterol lowering journey which will include free one-on-one nutritional advice, diet tips and access to fitness classes.
RTE TV’s today show were in town filming over the weekend for a piece which will be aired in January and Cork’s 96fm were also in the Hotel airing their afternoon show on Sunday afternoon.
In Ireland approximately 10,000 people die each year from Cardiovascular Disease (CVD), accounting for more deaths than breast cancer, prostate cancer and bowel cancer combined. Having too much cholesterol in your blood increases your risk of heart disease.
Cobh Mayor, Cllr. John Mulvihill, commented: “We are thrilled that Flora pro.activ has selected Cobh for this initiative. Elevated cholesterol is an important health issue that affects our entire country and we look forward to proving to the nation that it is possible for a community to come together and make positive health changes.”
Shoeb Asad, Brand Manager, Flora said: “We´re very excited to have brought this first-of-its-kind activity to Cobh. Flora pro.activ´s `It takes a town´ has been a huge success in other countries, including Floraville in Australia, Sym in Greece and Bremen in Germany.”
