Cork’s RedFM Complete Breaking The Silence Training

Breaking The Silence is a Cobh based voluntary group that helps to create a Suicide Safer Community by connecting the person at risk of Suicide with life preserving resources.  The Group delivered Safe Talk (Suicide Alertness For Everybody) training at Cork’s RedFM recently and this is the feedback received from RedFM after this training was completed:

“Eight members of staff from Cork’s RedFM completed a three hour SafeTalk course on Tuesday, April 5th, they included News Editor Lana O’Connor along with Michelle Moran and Fiona Donnelly who are also members of the news team along with Joe Harrington from the Sports department.

Other staff members from various departments across Cork’s RedFM who completed the course include Tanya Sullivan, Caroline Murphy, Emma Brosnan and RedFM’s webmaster Jen O’Donovan.

All of those who participated said they found it helpful in dealing with a subject which is so prevalent in the current climate and felt that for the radio station as a whole it is really important to be Suicide aware.

Our listeners now know that staff at Cork’s RedFM are trained to help someone who is having suicidal thoughts and puts us in a strong position to raise the profile of support groups like Breaking the Silence.

The training has also provided us with a list of contacts for doctors, counsellors and help-lines which can offer further assistance to anyone who is feeling suicidal.

On the news front the news team now feel more confident about interviewing families affected by suicide and speaking to professionals who deal with the issue. We now feel that we are better equipped to deal with the issue responsibly and empathetically.

We posted on RedFM’s facebook page and twitter account that we had completed the SafeTalk Training Programme and we got an overwhelmingly positive response from many people who had previously completed the programme.

We would highly recommend that every company avail of this training as it is very insightful and informative and is well worth completing”.

Breaking The Silence will run their next ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) Programme in Cobh on 31st May and 1st June.  This is a free training programme and to book a place or receive further information please email breakingthesilencecobh@gmail.com To keep up to date with Breaking The Silence training programmes and activies you can find us on facebook by searching for ‘Breaking The Silence Cobh’.
