Councillor Sinead Sheppard welcomed news that €1 million has been allocated to Local Authorities for this year, so they can play a key role in Ireland 2016, the national and international initiative to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising
The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys TD met with the City and County Managers Association (CCMA) to discuss Ireland 2016, and informed the meeting of the funding.
“I welcome this funding, which will enable councils around the country to play their part in delivering Ireland 2016 and bring their own local focus to the commemoration. This is a once in a generation opportunity to evaluate what we’ve achieved as a nation and consider what we want to do in the next 100 years,” Councillor Sheppard stated.
“While there will be a series of formal State events, I want to encourage schools, history groups, arts organisations, sporting organisations and a range of other groups to get involved here in the Cobh area
“The public consultation process is ongoing, and meetings will be held in the coming months, so members of the public can come together to hear about Ireland 2016, meet those involved in their community and explore and learn about how they can get involved,” she added.
