Nealon’s Quay in Youghal and Spike Island Pier are to is to receive a total of €207,750 in funding under the 2015 Fishery Harbours Capital Investment Programme’, says Cork East Fine Gael TD, David Stanton.

‘I am delighted that Cork County Council is to receive this funding to carry out a range of works to improve the piers at Spike Island and Nealon’s Quay. I understand that the €207,750 will constitute 75% of the total cost of the projects with Cork County Council providing the balance”, said Deputy Stanton.

‘The Nealon’s Quay project will receive €95,250 which will be used to replace stairs, repair columns and repairs to spalling and cracked concrete. It will also fund new mooring rings and fender brackers.

‘The Spike Island funding of €112,500 will be used to improve access to the island by upgrading and improving the pier.

‘Funding for the upgrading works in Youghal and Spike Island forms part of a funding tranche of €5 million under the 2015 Fishery Harbours Capital Investment Programme includes allocations of €3.9 million allocated to 6 fishery centres and €1.1 million allocated to 17 Local Authority Harbour projects. This brings the total capital allocation under the 2015 Programme to €22.9 million in addition to the €1.6 million allocated last month under the Local Authority Harbour Development and Marine Leisure programme.

‘Our fishing, marine and tourism industries depend so much on the infrastructure of piers, harbours and amenities around the coastline of Ireland. I hope that the renovations at Nealon’s Quay and Spike Island help to ensure continued and enhanced use of these piers for tourism, leisure and marine purposes.
