Former residents of Married Quarters on Haulbowline hold reunion

Former residents of Married Quarters at the Naval Base Haulbowline recently held a family reunion day at the Naval Base by kind permission of the Flag Officer Commanding Naval Service.

The day commenced with Mass at ‘ Our Lady Star Of The Sea ‘ Church Haulbowline  celebrated by Naval Service Chaplain Rev. Fr. Des Campion.

This was followed by a nostalgic tour of the Island with families being photographed outside their former homes, while reminiscing of very happy times spent there, indeed some were seen to have tears in their eyes. Five families were denied the chance of enjoying this privilege and were very disappointed, they discovered that their former homes no longer exist, flattened in the interest of progress. Now families no longer reside on the island and the buildings that once functioned as married quarters, now serve the need of administration and storage space.

Following the tour everyone retired to the NCOs’ Mess where good food and refreshments married with pleasant craic, banter and reminiscence was enjoyed by all and made for a very pleasant day.

The delightful reunion was organised by members of the Fahy family.
