The OPW team at Fota Arboretum and Gardens was delighted to be presented recently with their 2020 Green Flag by Patrick O’Donovan, Minister of State for the Office of Public Works.

Fota Arboretum and Gardens is one of 9 OPW managed parks and gardens to achieve Green Flag accreditation in 2020.

The Green Flag Awards, administered by An Taisce in the Republic of Ireland, recognise and encourage the provision of good quality parks and green spaces that are managed in environmentally sustainable ways. The awards are marked on eight criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.

Chris O’Neill, Parks Superintendent, noted that ‘The Green Flag award is an international benchmark standard for well managed and sustainable public parks and gardens.

Fota Arboretum and Gardens is one of only two public parks and gardens with a Green Flag in County Cork, the other being Garinish Island.

The award is a great achievement for the OPW team at Fota.’
