Great Island 10 – Thank You

Published

on

The second annual ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ took place on 17th April 2011 for the benefit of the Irish Cancer Society and for Palliative Care in particular and once again hundreds of participants either ran or walked through the streets and roads of Cobh and the Great Island to raise money for this worthy cause. €20,823.90 was raised so far making a grand total of a massive €56,823.90 collected over the last two years.

The organising committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved for making it such a wonderful event, including the runners, walkers, marshals, Cobh Town Council, Cobh Community Centre, Irish Red Cross, Sergeant Liam Fenney and Cobh Gardai and all those who provided sponsorship and support too numerous to mention. This support would be considered exceptional in ordinary times but in the midst of a recession it was simply phenomenal. A special word of thanks must go to those who took the time to line the route and cheer the runners on. It means a lot to them to receive this encouragement and the feedback this year was again full of praise for these supporters.

A cheque will be presented to the Irish Cancer Society in the Rushbrooke Tennis Club on Saturday 3rd September 2011. The Big Band will be playing and have offered their services free of charge and all are welcome. Admission is free!  There will also be a BBQ for €7 for any hungry parishioners – this is optional. We would like to thank Rushbrooke Tennis Club for hosting the event and The Big Band for providing the entertainment.

On behalf of ‘The Great Island 10 Committee’ and on behalf of all those who will benefit in the future from the work of the Irish Cancer Society, can I once again issue a heartfelt thanks to everyone.
